Singular & Serial: Contemporary Monotype and Monoprint. Artist talk with Catherine Kernan.

Saturday, October 19, 2019: 1-2:30pm

at the Cambridge Public Library

The fascination with monotype and monoprint never diminishes, thanks to the primal thrill of making a mark, combined with suspense and surprise as paper is lifted from a press. Join author and printmaker Catherine Kernan as she discusses her new book Singular & Serial: Contemporary Monotype and Monoprint and explain her processes and motivations for making singular prints. Following a short presentation, she will be joined by R. Leopoldina Torres, President of the Monotype Guild of New England, to discuss current practice and historical context for monotypes and monoprints within New England. Catherine will be available after the discussion to sign copies of her new book.

Catherine Kiernan is primarily a studio artist and earned her credentials as a Master Printer by undertaking a number of projects in collaboration with other artists. She has produced commissioned editions for the Print Club of Cleveland, the Print Club of Rochester, and the Flint Institute of Art. In 2018, she was awarded a grant from the Pollack Krasner Foundation. Catherine is also a founding partner of Mixit Print Studio, an open access professional studio in Somerville, Massachusetts. She has held teaching appointments at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, among other institutions. From 2010 until 2017, Catherine was Director of Maud Morgan Arts, an art center in Cambridge, MA. Her work is in many public and private art collections, including Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Boston Public Library, Grunewald Collection, New York Public Library, Library of Congress, Detroit Institute of Art, Davison Art Center at Wesleyan University, and the Harvard Art Museums.
